MIXOPINION: God bless the Americans!

Last week, on the 4th of July (USA's Independence Day), I coincidently had a very interesting conversation with an American guest who was staying at a hotel in the Bahamas. Myrella was her name; she was ecstatic for enjoying a vacation in a "paradise", where everyone is cool, everything very relaxing and every kind of music is danced to. Myrella and her husband retired after 20 years serving the American Army and are current residents of Colorado. The were really happy with the opportunity to spend the holiday in such an exciting and fun country, after having dealt with sadness, deaths and several losses. During the relentess years of wars everything would have happened very fast: their children grew up, they lost a lot of friends and got older without realizing it. "Life is too short, baby", she convincely advised.
So our chat suddenly turned to the subject of war. A delicate issue, besides my english far from faultless, that's very difficult to comment or even to quote, without somehow sounding foolish. Actually, we are very far from the war's reality, terror, nuclear weapons, although so intrinsically close. I felt an enormous respect and admiration to that family and just thought "thank godness" someone goes there for us, so we don't have to. I mentioned, with certain apprehension, what we hear most of the time in small talks - like usual blahblahblahs of someone that isn't aware of nothing and thinks he is, by reproducing sentences of general medias or other sources: people say, for example, it's only a matter of power that the Americans insist on wars, etc. By the way, I confirmed my totally diferent opinion and had a chance to express my admiration. "God bless the americans" - after all, it's conspicuous, if they wouldn't go to face the war, who would really be at the battlefield?
My country for sure would never. Far away, neither a neutral country as Switzerland nor other financially unsteady nations. Neither a relaxing archipelago as the Bahamas, of course. Indeed, no one can deny it: the American is such a strong patriot citizen. It's impressing how it's so commun to see flags on every corner of the USA. Truth be told: there is a bunch of things only made by them, incredible. By the way I asked my new "friend" wheter she was one of those beautiful and anguished women of the Sunday movie series "Army Wives", that wait for their husbands coming back from the wars. She admitted by saying "unfortunately yes". I became curious wheter she had chosen her husband aware that he was a soldier and Myrella affirmed smiling: they met in Korea. "What a hard undertaking!", I felt stirred.
After a while talking woman to woman, about convictions that we are much stronger than the men, although they "go to fight", we are much better at keeping our emotions under control  (...), Myrella told me the prayer was the only thing able to save and give her the strenght during all the times her husband was abroad. She, a strong woman, could survive, exceptionally likewise her marriage. At the end of conversation, I told her how much I appreciated speaking to her and each of us ran away to see the 4 of July fireworks and enjoy life; me, just happy and satisfied for remembering that my life has absolutely nothing extraordinary. She, even happier for having three more exciting vacation days, colorful with the ocean's turquoise water and other wonderful stuff to enjoy. Yes, "life is really too short!".
